The 28th century is unique! Prior to this, discoveries in science, and developments in technology and innovation, accelerated century by century. Then it effectively stopped: every question that had ever been asked had been answered by science, every challenge had been solved by innovation, and time lost its significance.
ACE:AI
Scientific hypothesis and experimental research has been driven by increasingly powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The laws of physics have been refined, and major new discoveries were made. Chemistry has been fully mastered by AI, and materials can be produced to meet any criteria. Meta-materials and smart materials are dominant in advanced applications. Biology and medicine saw major breakthroughs following the creation of an accurate simulation of cells, whereby all intra-cellular and extra-cellular molecular functions and interactions were understood (by AI). Similarly, AI has achieved a thorough understanding of viruses, bacteria, plants, animals and the human mind. For those that have access to advanced medical services, long healthy lives are achievable. Death still occurs, but for those brave enough to take the leap, life after death is available via ACE:QSR.
The greatest innovation is the Asteroid Computing Environment (ACE). The raw materials found in asteroids are converted into solar powered smart materials, which forms a huge solar system ring between Mars and the asteroid belt. Trillions of smart thin nodes communicate with each other in this ring to form a robust computing environment. However, damage regularly occurs to nodes due to intense radiation, high energy subatomic particles, and collisions with other objects. So smart nodes either repair themselves or get replaced with new nodes. This damage typically goes unnoticed; but large scale destruction creates a temporary glitch (called the deja vu glitch).
ACE forms the basis of all computations, AI systems and the creation of Quantum Synthetic Reality (QSR). For those that opt in, on their death their brains are scanned and uploaded into the QSR. The minds of those people are able to live on in apparently real environments, similar to those they were familiar with; and they can also go far beyond (in space, time, and "reality").
What follows is an exploration of the year 2753w. The "w" means the date with respect to Earth; time is different and variable in the QSR. Living forever comes with a challenge: infinite boredom after everything has been experienced. So the QSR has a solution to this: finite personal memory and a vast range of customisable scenes. During the experience a person only has the memory of that scene, no prior memories (except where initial parameters allow, such as subconscious safety prompts).
