Amazing Innovations: Artificial Intelligence: 2016

Our final innovation will result from our ultimate quest to build an artificial intelligence (AI) that is as smart as us. This point is called the AI Singularity. However, it does not stop there as AI then evolves further to become much smarter than us!

In many ways AI is already smarter than us, as it can beat us in the following areas:

» information searches

» general knowledge quizzes

» language translation

» processing speed and calculations

» analysis of big data

» pattern recognition and predictions.

Significant progress is also being made in other areas too. For example:

» AI has demonstrated creative and artistic abilities (across various applications and media forms)

» AI driven robots design and perform their own science experiments, and make new discoveries!

» AI has taken a management position!

Here are some of the amazing innovations that took place in 2016, or did they? See how many you get right in this true or false quiz...

Emotions interface

Artificial intelligence (AI) can already recognise faces but now it has been predicted that next year it will have an emotions interface that can detect your emotions and respond accordingly.

True? False?

[Watch out for emotional computers!]

Cancer research

In the US it has been announced that they will create an AI platform for accelerating cancer research.

True? False?

AI is expected to be hugely beneficial in scientific and medical research.

Language translation

We might already take it for granted but AI language translation keeps getting better. A wide range of languages can now be translated and now speech can be translated in real-time! [Just like in Star Trek.] Microsoft demonstrated how adding four FPGA boards to a high-end 24-CPU core configuration can, in 2.5 seconds, translate the 1,400-page "War and Peace" from Russian to English.

True? False?

Supercomputers can now achieve amazing things in the blink of an eye.

AI the professional

AI, in the form of IBM Watson, has started helping out with the teaching and learning of students. It can also help doctors with their diagnosis for patients; and assist professionals in other sectors.

True? False?

What no jobs?

A number of articles appeared about AI taking jobs - starting with about 45 percent of the jobs in the next 20 years. Few sectors and roles will be immune.

Brain like chip

To build AI systems a brain like chip has been developed.

True? False?

The chip simulates neurons and the connections between them.

Brain chip

AI developments are progressing faster now because we copy the way the brain works. But what about this: a chip that contains brain cells (neurons) has been developed!

True? False?

It is true: real brain cells! - pinch yourself and do a reality check. [An ethics check is also required when the number of cells gets large.]

AI the scientist

AI is doing science: biology and physics experiments.

True? False?

AI is becoming a useful scientific technology.

AI creativity

Scientists prove that AI will never be creative.

True? False?

Actually, AI got a job as Creative Director! [and AI continues to demonstrate its creative abilities in a range of areas]
